When when my husband and son started gravitating towards singletrack last year, I reluctantly joined them. I’m so glad I did. We’re fortunate to have many miles of trails near our home and over the past year each outing has been slightly less terrifying – and more fun – than the last. My son’s appetite for singletrack has taken us to some incredible trail systems in Virginia and North Carolina but this weekend we headed north to check out two different networks of trails.

While the trails at the New England Outdoor Center (NEOC) are short on miles (about 5 are complete – more in the works) they make up for it in views. It’s tough to beat coming down this section through a meadow with Katahdin in the distance. These trails are smooth and flowy and fun. The full loop can be done at an easy pace in just about an hour – and it’s worth going around again.

After the NEOC, we headed to the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle. This incredible spot has 20 miles of super fun singletrack. Some sections are smooth and flowy and some are narrow and technical – they’re all crazy fun. Our favorites were Lower Goat and West Side and Eric’s Around the Mountain. But we didn’t try them all – there’s more to explore here and we’ll be back for sure.
